Organize my garage!

We are going to fly off the door radar here and talk about the garage! Spring is a wonderful time to get your garage in ORDER! Follow these steps and when you are all done you may even want to consider a new door!

Garage Organization

We are always talking doors, doors, doors… How about we mix it up and talk about the garage itself! Today we are going to tackle CLEARING OUT THE CLUTTER!!!

Inventory

1. CHECK AND LOOK AT WHAT IS IN YOUR GARAGE.  Perhaps you need to make a list of what you have so you can logically inventory what needs to be there and what does not have to be there. Decide what really needs to stay in the garage and what needs to be stored some other place.

2. GROUPING. Now pick thing that go together and put them in groups and categories. Lawn equipment and yard tools, automotive parts and tools, sporting goods and equipment, children’s toys should be kept together, and so on.

3. LOOK AT YOUR SPACE. Starting with the biggest items and narrowing them down, access the available space. Now is a good time to look up at the ceiling and look at the walls. If you put a work bench or shelving in one corner or on one wall would that clarify the space?  Would it provide easier access to more frequently utilized items?

4. REMOVE EVERYTHING.  Take everything out of the garage and place it where it will be secure and dry. Remember this could take several days or week-ends to complete the project.  Decide what you want to throw away or store elsewhere.  Now take those items and put them in their proper place. Time to clean! Now sweep out the garage, dust and grab a garden hose if necessary. Now put your vehicles and any extremely large items back. This may be a riding mover, chest type freezer or large air compressor. This way you will see exactly what space is remaining.

5. STORAGE SOLUTIONS TIME. Now you can add a tool caddy, shelving, work bench or storage bins. Anything that makes your life easier! whatever you have decided will meet your needs.  Remember you have to accommodate all of the stuff you have sitting stored.

6. PUT IT ALL BACK!  It is going to go back a lot easier. You will have a renewed energy in looking at your clean and newly organized garage.

Power Out! - Garage Door Open!

Plan Ahead to Avoid Garage Door Lock-In During a Power Outage

Most people don't even think about their automatic garage door opener not working during a power outage. We just expect it to faithfully go up and down when we press the button.

If the power goes out, you may need to disconnect your automatic opener to manually open your garage door. Familiarize yourself with the process in advance to avoid having to search frantically for the garage door instruction manual in the dark.

Here are some tips to help avoid getting "locked-in" the garage:

1. Disconnect or unplug your automatic garage door opener when the garage door is closed.

2. Pull the emergency cord to disconnect the garage door opener from the door. The cord usually has a red handle and will hang down from the center rail of the garage door mechanism.

3. Lift the garage door straight up until the door is fully open. Make sure the door will remain open on its own. If the springs are properly balanced, the door will open easily and stay in place. If it’s difficult to open, have a garage door service professional inspect the door to avoid further damage or safety risks.

4. Close the garage door manually and lock it. The garage door isn’t securely shut until you manually slide the lock bar.

5. Reconnect the automatic garage door opener when the power comes back on. Make sure the door is unlocked when the opener is reconnected. Opening the garage door with the lock bar in place can cause major damage.

Garage Door Safety!

June is Garage Door Safety Month!

It is time to perform safety inspections on your overhead garage doors.

Here are a few things that homeowners should check. Remember a professional should inspect and make any repairs! A yearly visit from the garage door repair technician will keep your door running safely and smoothly.

• Check that the door opens and closes smoothly. If not, the springs may need to be adjusted.  

• If your garage door springs are not correctly gauged, they may be too tightly wound and can cause damage or injury if they wear out and break.

•  Make sure you do not have any loose brackets on your door. Brackets are under tension and they can cause injury if they loosen or are removed.

•  Closely inspect cables, look for wearing or fraying.

•  Check the opener’s automatic reverse. To test the garage door opener, put a roll of paper towels under the door. Lower the door, it should reverse when it hits the paper towels.  If it does not reverse have it checked!     

• Always install control opener switches at least 5 feet above the floor so small children cannot reach them.
